The story begins on a crisp June night. The thermometer read just above freezing as my family and I huddled around a campfire, gazing out over the Great Plains of Montana. The sky was turning blue as the flames flickered in the air. Sitting around the campfire, we didn’t say much, just marveling at the stillness in the air. The year was 2020, and we were on a great road trip across the American West—until, in the middle of the night, the heat in our motorhome gave out.
No cell service. No easy fix. Just my dad, a satellite phone, and a call to my grandpa in Alaska, trying to figure out how to bring warmth back to our motorhome. The air was tense that night, but the fire grounded us. It reminded us that sometimes, even when things don’t go as planned, there’s peace to be found in simply being present, in sitting around a campfire, in sharing the silence.
