Hello Everyone! Welcome to the third volume of “Print is NOT Dead”. A new mini-series where I will be showing you guys the behind the scenes (BTS) of creating the Revelry Collection magazine.
Below is an exclusive preview showcasing some of the photos that will be in the first issue (001) of the Revelry Collection magazine.
The Importance of Perspective
Today, I am going to start with showing you guys the first step (And maybe the most important step) of creating a story for the magazine, the photos.
Every article I or one of our contributors creates, starts with the photos. It is what kickstarts the inspiration for a story. If the photos aren’t good, rarely do I write about the experience. The concept of a photo quote on quote being good, is very subjective. Although there are usually some key things to look for; such as depth, emotion, lighting, composition, among other things. The human eye is pretty good at discerning a good image from a bad one. But sometimes you need a different perspective.
One thing I have learned over this process of creating a magazine from scratch, is that people don’t have the same eye as me. And what I mean by that, is if me and another photographer saw the same sunset scene in front of us, we would both take two completely different photos.
At first that frustrated me, I wanted every photo in the magazine to have a similar look and feel to it. But then I embraced it, I embraced the fact that other people have different perspectives. And thats ok, it doesn’t make my perspective better or worse, it’s just different.
So now as I head into the late stages of editing this magazine and as it starts to really come to life, I appreciate the different perspectives that others bring. It’s so important to view the world from various perspectives. I mean if we all viewed the world from the same perspective, we would be robots. Our perspective is what makes us human.
Magazine Update
The preparation for the launch of the magazine this winter is coming along well. Right now I am finalizing the little last minute details. Our contributors amazing work is coming in, the business side is getting up and running, and every moment that passes makes this feel more real. Today, I am excited to share with you the back cover of the magazine. This photo was taken on the North Shore of Oahu under a shady banyan tree in town. It plays perfect contrast to the front cover (Which I will be announcing soon).
Closing Thoughts
I hope you guys enjoyed volume three of the “Print is NOT Dead” mini-series. Stay tuned, because in the next newsletter I will be sharing the launch date for the magazine. It’s coming sooner than you think.
Signing off, Bentley Zylstra
I'm really looking forward to seeing this publication come to life! Congratulations!
